Nepal. Really?
The small country of Nepal has just experienced a traumatic event. The government building have been burned and several members of the government or their family members have been killed or chased through the streets.
While agonizing for all involved, we should take this as an example of how precarious is the peaceful society we all live in.
On the surface, the events in Nepal seem comical. It all started when a group of young people expressed an intention to demonstrate against the government. In response, the government chose to shut down the internet. That made matters worse.
Young people marched on the center of government in protest against the government and against the loss of the internet. From here I’m not sure of the timeline. Either the protestors first set fire to the government buildings or the government first turned the internet back on.
Either way, many people died and terrible things happened.
The young people then held an election on-line, on Discord, to elect a new leader of the country. Remarkably, the military authorities accepted this as a legitimate election and the new leader has been installed.
An independent country is now governed by a leader chosen by an on line poll directly after a violent attack on the seat of government. Never take anything for granted.
