What is Dad News Network?

Dad News Network aims to answer the question, “who can I trust in the media?” Since Al Gore invented the internet, the media landscape has exploded with thousands of outlets, creating a blur of options making it difficult to know whom to trust. Our response at Dad News Network is to trust those closest to us, beginning with our families, our parish, and those we know and have looked in the eye.

Call it the subsidiarity of information.

When we were both approached separately by our own families and asked to curate and put “current events” into perspective, we realized there was a service we could provide. Our families are careful with media consumption and internet use. Where to direct our older children when it comes to learning about important events in the world? Perusing even “respectable” news outlets leads to an array of distracting and problematic advertising, erroneous information, and a quantity of information that is overwhelming. Here we curate only the most important stories, grounded in news sources we have come to trust through long experience and personal knowledge.

The end result is a trusted perspective on the news presented with clarity, charity, and–when possible–levity.

Ok, but why the “Other Stuff”?

The Other Stuff section of Dad News Network has a similar mission but with an eye on the culture. From movie and music recommendations and reviews, to essays on family life and personal finance, we reject the conventional social media wisdom that says you should only write for one niche and “stay in your lane.” The “Other Stuff” section provides commentary, comedy, and reflections on life beyond the news. Not trained “experts” in music, film, or personal finance, we offer commentary and recommendations from a trusted dad perspective.

Isn’t “Dad” a derogatory term?

Not anymore. Once deployed as shorthand for “old”, “uncool”, or “lame”, Dad News Network reclaims the inherent coolness of being a dad and elevates the term to its appropriate place–as shorthand for “important,” “wise,” and, occasionally, “based.”

Who is Dad News Network?

Geoffrey Vaughan, Editor and Chief Writer, News and Commentary

Geoffrey is father of three girls, grandfather to one boy, and married for more than half his life to the wonderful woman who made all the foregoing possible. An academic by training, he exhibits all the vices of that tribe. When awoken from his dogmatic slumber he occasionally rouses himself to become assistant volleyball coach assistant to the volleyball coach.

Jarrett Conner, Editor and Chief Writer, The Other Stuff

Jarrett is a father of nine and husband to a wonderful painter of birds and interesting plants. A hack rock and roll drummer, occasional volleyball coach, and co-founder of the Lumen Christi Homeschool Consortium, he is currently working (in his head at least) on a book about the Coen brothers movies, all of them.

They both attend the traditional Latin Mass and are card carrying Glad Trads.
